K-Jam Startup Guide

The dark side of the software industry has better support for hardware, really sad, so I finally bought one of those little gadgets that allows you to phone, visit webpages, and so on. And now I am carrying a windows in my pocket the whole day, and it hurts ( it may well be the Wifi raditation tough ). But I bought it with the hope that someday I’ll be able to throw WM2005 away and put some sort of free kernel inside it… but meanwhile I want to use it… So this is the list of applications and little tweaks I have found useful, I haven’t had the K-Jam for a long time so I guess this list will grow, and as usual suggestions are very apreciated!.

Configure the GPRS for the service provider. From Pof or do it with a self made CAB from xda-developers forum.
Modify the register, either with a .CAB or manually, to have the 802.11g working, by default it only works in b mode. From xda-developers forum.
Magic Button a free task switcher.
Pocket Putty, an ssh client for pocket pc, have no idea of the License it uses but the code is said to be released soon.
GSFinder+, a GPL filesystem explorer, a very good alternative to resco.
TCPMP, The Core Pocket Media Player, incredible movie player. GPL license.
SJphone, propietary software to make SIP phone calls.
PocketSNES, a SNES emulator for the pocket pc.
Kilmist registry editor a non free registry editor, resco can be used as alternative to this.
Omap Overclock (v2) let’s overclock K-Jam, works wonderfully for Skype, SJphone, IAXppc … from xda-developers forum

Linux Smartphone ( with GSM )

Our freedom in the desktop/notebook world has always been threatened, but we have free operating systems that can compete with any closed solution, however when it comes to the phone industry we are mostly jailed to closed systems, specifications are rarely published and there does not seems to be any hope that this will change.

After seeing Pof’s smartphone ( Blueangel ) running Linux I was so amazed that decided to start looking for a nice one capable of running a decent Linux. What follows is a list of the smartphones that have a GSM phone, and for which exists some kind of free operating system port, the list is not complete and is based on Linux kernel phones, please leave comments on phones not included here I hope there is a phone which I don’t know that can run a free OS perfectly.

22C3, 22nd Chaos Communication Congress.

November 9th, 2005

Through Pof I got to the 22C3 event Blog , a nice place to start looking for what is going to be awaiting us at the congress.

Borja and I are going there on the 27th, arrivng at Schoenenfeld Airport around 16:30, so I will be missing part, if not all, of the first day , a real pity!
